Donnie’s CRX

These days within the Honda crowd it takes a lot of originality to take any Honda to the next level, but it all begins with a plan.  But with any build there will always be roadblocks that force you to change something.  And that is exactly what Donnie went through with his CRX build from start to finish.

The build started way back when Donnie was 12 years old when he purchased the car as his own project after years and years of working with his father aka “Catfish”.  Who is  a well known and established car builder that has built it all from lowriders to high power Hondas since before any of us were born out of his home!  Donnie had planned to go simple with the build and keep it as the car that he grows old in being his first childhood project car.

But as time goes on things happen and cars get put on the back burner.  And the CRX sat for a few years and never got touched.  Eventually it was time for the CRX to get some love.  The motor build was easy for Donnie, he had been building Honda motors for years and had knew the right formula to get the right numbers out of the B Series.

The roadblock came in a form of a deer running out in front of the CRX one night when the car was being driven by his father “Catfish”.  And immediately the ideas started to flow from Catfish on the EK front end on the CRX.  Many have went this route, but many have not done in this way that makes it look like it should have came from the factory.  Instead of just making a EK front fit on a CRX core support and front end, the EK core support and about 6 inches back was formed together with the CRX body and done in a way were no one can ever tell.  This comes from many years of body work experience between Donnie and Catfish.  The complete  shave, body work and paint in the bay was done and painted by themselves.

The engine as of now makes 500hp just on the wastegate, and has the capacity to make well over 700+hp.  The car has not been put together long enough to take it for passes at the track, or make any high power dyno pulls, but it is in the works.  Also unfortunately the heart of this car will be removed in the future and put into a EK drag car they are putting together.

The quality and craftsmanship in this car is top notch from head to toe, and the few hours we spent with the car for this photo session, and talking with Donnie his father, and his close friend.  We knew that this was nothing for them, and something that they have been doing for years out of their home garage just for the love!

We also love the fact that this car does have a huge build thread on Honda-Tech and Donnie is not a forum junkie like most of us.  When I asked Donnie if he had a build thread, he replied that he just could not deal with the drama involved when someone does a front end conversion these days, and just stuck to his personal log on Facebook.  All the hard work and dedication that this car was truly a self motivated build, everything other than the paint was done by Donnie himself.

It was a complete pleasure to see this car at Import Alliance, after only being together for 1 day, and to find out that it was a local Georgia car.  It was a even better pleasure to meet a group of guys that are dedicated to the automotive scene.

I think the Don Man has created a very cool car. Here’s to you Donnie you did a great job.
