A personal perspective on the new Atlanta Motorsports Park from the world famous Tracy Shayhorn!
When I first heard of this “world class driving facility” located in Dawsonville, Georgia back in 2009, I was a little skeptical—and so was anyone that I mentioned it to. For years there were rumors of tracks just like it in the works, but they just never came to fruition, thus the skepticism. First of all, I had always heard and assumed that no county or city, or however it works, in Georgia would ever approve the zoning. Secondly, even if that wasn’t true, I just couldn’t believe anyone would be able to gather the capital it takes to get something like this going given the poor state of the economy. After all, what was being proposed was far above and beyond your average luxury item.

I’d continue to be skeptical. Living in Dallas we have seen more than a few track projects be announced and fail and three actually succeed. There are really four major milestones/hurdles that need to be reached. 1) Buying the land 2) Zoning/Approval 3) Dirt Work 4) Paving. From the photos and article looks like steps 1 and 2 are done and they are working on step 3. Both the dirt work and the paving are serious money outlays. We have had a track stall and ultimately fail at the dirt work stage and another which finally did build stall at the dirt work stage before finally gathering the money necessary for paving but has had intermittent issues with paving since then. Not until the paving is complete would I say it’s done. Granted you might not have anything but a track with an onsite construction trailer as the clubhouse but at least at that point you’ve got a track that someone can use. The rest is really minor after that point.
No where in the article did I call the track finished or done. I simply stated that it looks to be coming a long nicely, that it has passed zoning and it seems like it is going to have all of the promised amenities in place (as they have not changed their story since the beginning on what it will include and they are still sticking by it). I, for one, know that nothing is done until it done. I have experienced just as much as you have, I am sure.
I have followed this tracks progress since the beginning. I showed up to almost every zoning meeting. I listen to every side of the story—from angry neighbors, to track supporters, to the city officials and planners that I mentioned who are supporting the project. I did all of this, not because I have a financial interest in the facility, but because I have a genuine interest in seeing it come to life. I understand your current skepticism, but please pardon my excitement on it’s progress 🙂
