SF Build: Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ Tomei 60R Exhaust Install
We are introducing a new section to our site. It will be a section solely for new parts on the market, and part reviews. We will have some of our own that we document. And we will also be accepting some from you all. We are looking for honest and fair reviews with photos and before and after results.
We are accepting them through our email: contact@southrnfresh.com
The first review by us is for my newly acquired Tomei 60R Exhaust on my FR-S
The Toyobaru twins have an endless list of aftermarket support, USDM and JDM alike. Recently a well-respected tuning brand introduced an affordable full titanium catback exhaust for the FRS/BRZ/GT86. That tuning company is Tomei.
The introduction of the 60S, 60R, and 80R Expreme Ti exhaust systems, showcases a full-titanium system for just above $1,000! Yes, full titanium, as in massive weight savings over the stock system. Savings range from 22.27 lbs from the Type 80 for forced induction applications to 28.22 lbs in the 60R race version, while the 60S street version falls in between the two.
When I first purchased my car from fellow Southrnfresh photographer, Evan Butts, in August I knew I wanted to add a full exhaust system almost immediately to replace the Berk Technology Track Pipe. While the track pipe did its job of offering audible pleasure, I wanted something that was a full catback so I could later add the cat delete pipe and the rest of the header back system.
That’s when I stumbled upon the Tomei Expreme Ti systems. Immediately I knew it would be the exhaust I would go with. Titanium coupled to a single exit exhaust, what was there not to love.
I placed a preorder through FT86 Speed Factory based out of Des Moines, Iowa. Jeremy and Yo were a joy to work with and always responded to my persistent emails. FT86 Speed Factory also offers the lowest price on all three exhausts that I’ve seen around. That’s right sub $1,000 with free shipping.
After about a month and a half of waiting for the exhaust to get here from Japan, I was able to install it myself in about an hour at Express Auto Salon in Kenner, LA. The fit and finish of this exhaust is spectacular. The welds are so crisp and you can tell the craftsmanship of each piece when you handle it. The fitment of the exhaust in the exit hole in the rear bumper is perfect. Even with the optional Subaru rear diffuser installed there is room for the exhaust to breathe and not melt any component.
Now for what people want out of an exhaust. The sound. It has a very aggressive rumble and rasp at the same time. You can tell the car is a boxer but it also screams at wide open throttle. It also offers a lovely back fire on hard downshifts. For the price, this is clearly the direction people should go for their exhaust set up on whichever twin they own. Affordable, light weight, well made JDM exhaust.
