Project Third Times a Charm: New Beginnings
Where do I even begin? Its been a very long time since I’ve made any form of post on a Southrnfresh media outlet. I thought it was finally time to start posting again because I’ve missed doing this kind of stuff.
Quick run down on who I am. My name is Jason Scott and I was the Southrnfresh chapter of Texas. If a photo, feature, or etc came out of Texas my hand probably touched it at some point down the line before it hit the internet.
I was heavily involved during the Facebook golden era of car pages when Southrnfresh, V2Lab, Stancenation, Mayday Garage and etc. were blowing up in their respective area’s of the country.
Enough about me though…. What better way to get to posting again than making a build thread about my project car? Its a small step in the right direction haha..
The car for this project kind of just fell in my lap as I was scrolling though craigslist, I was just looking for a cheap RWD manual car I could do a simple drift/street car build with.
This was attempt number 1, a Nissan S14 I got out of Houma Louisiana. It looked like a great starting point. I got it for $1000 with full interior, trans and etc. it was just missing the KA in it, but that was fine because it was going to get an SR20 swap anyways.
It was fine until I dug a little deeper…
It turns out this was pretty much two cars welded together, I called it a 2pc chicken nugget from that day forward. So the S14 build stopped as soon as it started.
I proceeded to strip the car down completely and parted out every little item I could. It got to the point a friend even came over to cut out the front core support haha..
The last ride before it met it’s final fate…
I had it crushed… People cried about me destroying good quarter glass haha
With the previous attempt at getting a car not fairing super well. I went on the hunt again scrolling aimlessly through craigslist.
The basis of this new attempted build is a 1995 BMW M3 in Cosmos Black Metallic. I picked up this car from a guy out in Austin, TX for $3500 with around 190,000 miles on it. Overall the condition wasn’t bad, it had the usual oil leaks these cars are plagued with and a sun faded clear coat.
After driving it around stock for a while just to get a feel for the car itself, I started ordering generic maintenance items like valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gasket, spark plug boots, and various other rubber seals that gave up on life.
I didn’t get to capture all the photos during the basic maintenance phase sadly because the phone that held those photos decided to off itself…
Now the fun stuff started showing up, I placed a full order at AKG Motorsport to get a bunch of their bushings. I ended up getting their solid differential and rear subframe bushings. Along with that I got their reinforcement plates for the front and rear subframes due to those being potential problems that I wanted to prevent.
I also opted to get their stage II short shifter and DTM Selector rod..
This was one of the first splurge purchases for this car. I ended up getting a OMP Corsica Superleggero… It wasn’t thought out very well but overall I’m super happy with it and would do it again haha..
This is just the first of many posts to come for this car… Its a long term build for sure, its had its far share of hiccups along the way wether they were just bad luck or user created or a combination of both. I’ll share everything I can.
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to scroll through my first post in a long time. They should get better through time when we get into some of the more juicy parts of the build.
